As part of Torquay Museum’s Explorer Season, a talk by Dr Kate Strasdin: Snr Lecturer, History and Theory, Fashion and Textiles Institute, Falmouth University
‘An Easy Day for a Lady – the Clothing Practices of Early Women Mountaineers 1850-1914.’
‘Victorian ladies are too often depicted as wilting wallflowers, incapable of walking anywhere without fainting fits, wearing impractical corsets and long skirts. This lecture takes a fresh look at some of the most pioneering women of the second half of the 19th century, women who climbed mountains and did so whilst wearing some seemingly unlikely garments.’
