The day was hot and sunny for Helen’s 7 mile Cockington walk for which 25 people took part. We started at the Princess Theatre and walked along the prom and then the road as far as Preston before turning right up the path opposite the old gas works site, climbing gently up the hill through the woods until we reached the school. Here we took our first drinks break under the shade of the trees. Having quenched our thirst we dropped down hill to the stile on our right and descended along the path until we reached the main path which eventually climbs all the way to Occombe. However we did not go all the way up the hill but turned right which, after a descent, brought us to Warren Barn. Climbing the lane to the road, which we crossed, we entered a path which we followed around the upper parts of Cockington with lovely views across to St Marychurch on the other side of the valley. Having traversed this path we descended down into the valley, navigated a hill and a field before walking along the road to Cockington Court for lunch. After lunch we returned to the sea front via the lakes and the water meadows back to our starting point. A lovely walk on a lovely day, what more can anyone ask? By Rod W.
