On a beautiful sunny day 32 members turned up for Helen’s 6 mile walk from the Seven Stars, Totnes, to Ashprington and return. Setting off along the cycle track we climbed the hill and at the top the group split into two – almost half of the group opted to walk on the easier upper path to Ashprington thus avoiding any mud etc that might be encountered on the lower path not to mention the 4 stiles, while the other braved the lower path alongside the river. While it was a bit muddy in places it was not as bad as we expected. Part way along the path we paused for a drinks break in a very pleasant spot where there was room for us to sit and chat for a few minutes, before continuing along the path and climbing up through the field to rejoin the cycle track to the road. There were spectacular views along this section across the River Dart towards Haytor in the distance and down stream towards Dartmouth. . The group later all met up with one another just before descending down into Ashprington. Most had lunch outside the Church whilst some went into the Durant Arms for a coffee. Others took a few minutes to look into the church which is really nice with some beautiful wood carvings – well worth a visit. After lunch we then went down a steepish path towards Sharpham where we enjoyed more stunning views overlooking the river and beyond before rejoining the upper path taking us back into Totnes. A really lovely walk on a lovely day which made you feel that you were glad to be alive. Distance 6 miles.
