It was a beautiful warm and sunny day as 19 walkers set off for Wanda’s birthday wander from Starcross railway station to Exeter, a distance of approximately 7 miles.
The route took us along the road between the main railway line and Powderham until we reached the church where we turned off to the right to follow the river as far as Turf Lock.
There was a fair bit of activity both along the cycle track and on the river and when we arrived at the pub the grounds were very busy with people enjoying the lovely weather. Here we stopped for a drinks break and some of Wanda’s delicious cakes.
After our break we walked along the canal as far as double locks where we stopped for lunch and more cakes from Wanda and Maggie. When we had walked along this stretch about a fortnight ago the path was so overgrown that it was almost impossible to see where to put one’s foot as the canalside vegetation was shoulder height, however this time it had been cut it back to clear the way.
Sitting by the canal for our lunch we sang happy birthday to Wanda and again for Harry whose birthday was a couple of days away. As we continued along the canal we passed many people enjoying the water in canoes and rowing boats including, one young lady in her wedding dress on one of her Hen outings (she told us that she was having another one in Bristol) prior to her marriage in early August.
We eventually arrived in Exeter and at the basin the group divided – some going shopping, others for a drink, whilst the remainder made their way to St Thomas Station for our homeward journey. This was a level walk, in brilliant weather.
Thanks Wanda for a great day and lovely cakes (Maggie too).
