Lanhydrock House Excursion – Saturday 13th June

What a great time we had on our excursion to Lanhydrock House in Cornwall! The weather was perfect – sunny but not too hot. We enjoyed the scenic rail journey across the River Tamar and gathered at Bodmin Parkway Station. From there we walked beside the River Fowey to Respryn Bridge, on along a track and then up the wide avenue which leads to the Gatehouse at Lanhydrock. Some members were keen to explore the house and gardens, while others patronised the Courtyard Restaurant or Stables Café.

In the afternoon there was an optional walk on the Lanhydrock Estate for those not visiting the house and gardens. The highlight of this was a visit to the Victorian swimming pool, now a wildlife area and teeming with tadpoles, newts and damselflies. Back at the courtyard there was time for further refreshments before we met up in front of the Gatehouse to retrace our steps to the station. Arriving in plenty of time for our return train, we were treated to the sight of a steam engine from the Bodmin Railway puffing along the track.

One member summed the day up beautifully when he wrote ‘Many thanks for all the work that went into organising yesterday’s visit to Lanhydrock. It was a lovely day – excellent company, a fascinating place to explore and everything ran so smoothly. I enjoyed it enormously.’
